Message while the engine is idling (and the VTC are presumably making noise) activate the VTC by grounding the green with black stripe wires that go to the solenoids. If the noise goes away, the VTC are the culprit(s), if not look elsewhere.

If you think they may be the source of an oil leak, you will need to remove them so you can grab the rear plate and see if it spins. Using a rubber glove on your hand will help get enough grip on the cam seal plate. If it spins by hand, the o-ring is likely shot and leaking oil, if not, it's just a matter of time :-)
